288 paintings of the mountain and the river

From two pieces of birch plywood: one which resembled a mountain, and one which resembled a river. These became the woodblocks for 288 Paintings of the mountain and the river. A traveler walks down the river from east to west - this is the way the letters of the words are traveling. The prints are cut into one inch squares like parcels of land, or vignettes, and chine-colle'd on pages - one on mountain, one on river. The books weave together to make a book, creating a bulge in the center. The structure of the book is formed around this bulge.

The house for this book is also made of birch plywood, stained like sumi ink, with cut curves in the outline of the book, to hold a lid. The title is carved in the under-lid, and a set of original woodblock prints of mountain and river are laid below the bed of 288 paintings of the mountain and the river
